Finding motivation for exercise

Do you know your “why”? As in the reason you do what you do on a daily basis? What propels you to achieve your goals, strive for better, and to make your family, friends, community and the world at large better.

We all want to be healthy and know that exercise is good for us in theory, but how do you stay motivated to keep doing what’s best for your health?

I want to be able to play and lift my kids without worrying about paying for it later. I don't want my life to be limited to sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone else be active. I want to experience an active lifestyle with my kids. Being able to pull them up a hill on a sled, lift them around without a problem and get silly and play in all sorts of environments and positions.

Why do you want to work out? Is it to look better, feel better, be able to play a sport, run, or travel? Maybe you want to be able to sleep on the floor or in a tent if you go camping? Why are any of these important to you? Why do you care about these things? Is it just because someone told you it would be good for you, or do you actually find enjoyment, meaning, or purpose from these things?

Going to the gym will get you better at going to the gym. So make sure there is a reason behind the exercise you do so it is important to you and makes it more likely that you’ll stay consistent. It doesn’t have to be just one thing, and it certainly will change often over the course of your life, so every so often step back and think about what you’re doing - and ask yourself why.

That answer may give you the direction to focus your energies in the most productive, satisfying, and enjoyable way (and add in some of the health benefits of that movement at the same time).

If you need help figuring out your why or helping you get started with returning to activities don’t hesitate to reach out! We love helping our patients achieve their goals.
